On graduating, attracted by the high earnings potential, Caroline was offered roles at two recruitment agencies but chose Hydrogen. "I really gelled with my interviewer which helped and I was sold on the career progression opportunities and skills base development." She joined Hydrogen as a consultant, working in Project Partner's retail banking team initially before moving to public sector, specifically the NHS after six months. It was here that Caroline really found her niche and began to do well. Her billings increased, gaining her more recognition and a restructure resulted in an opportunity to prove herself as acting team leader.
Although a promotion to team leader of public sector was on the cards, Caroline sought a move to Hydrogen's new pharmaceutical practice instead. She could see the area held huge opportunities and wanted the challenge of starting up a team from scratch. This was a market that Caroline excelled in; "I definitely made the right move; within a year I was promoted to team leader in a market that I'm passionate about."
Caroline loves her job because she feels completely in control of her own development saying, "there really are no boundaries here." She also enjoys the fact that she has an international role in an international company and a real say in the development and direction of her team. Describing the culture as 'work hard, play hard' she admits that ultimately, her goal is to be a director here: "I want to open up a new area which is responsible for multiple disciplines."
Her biggest achievement to date has been building a successful team from scratch and she is really proud of what each member has achieved. "A couple of years ago I hired a guy with no previous recruitment experience who's now one of Hydrogen's top billers. I'm incredibly proud of him."
Tim Smeaton (CEO) was Caroline's mentor in 2010, and although their mentoring programme has come to an end, she feels privileged that he still takes the time to meet with her once a month, "I can't think of any other companies where that would happen."
When asked what she's learnt during her time here, Caroline doesn't hesitate; "To grow up, basically! Coming into this company and culture straight from uni meant taking on responsibility and developing self-discipline but I've enjoyed every minute!"
