Position Summary
Our client, a major utility company, is seeking an experienced Construction Manager to join their team on a contract basis.
The Construction Manager (CM) serves as the field leader responsible for the safe, efficient, and successful execution of substation and transmission construction projects. Acting as the primary liaison between field activities and the General Manager, the CM ensures adherence to engineering design, contract requirements, environmental regulations, safety standards, and project schedules. This role is approximately 20% office responsibilities and 80% field oversight.
Key Responsibilities
- Review contract documents, safety plans, permits, agreements, drawings, schedules, and QA/QC and submittal requirements; conduct kickoff meetings and orientations and train the team
- Assess project site (county, town, greenfield/brownfield, access and constraints)
- Review drawings, specifications, and engineering packages to define structures, equipment, systems, and demolition needs
- Monitor schedule adherence, milestones, and critical path, escalating delays as needed
- Manage materials: compare drawings to the Engineer of Record's bill of materials, confirm delivery/storage, verify nameplates and specs, and track shortages and damages
- Confirm permits and coordinate crossing approvals; ensure SWPPP and environmental compliance
- Lead safety efforts by enforcing the HASP, running daily safety meetings, and promoting a proactive safety culture
- Conduct daily walkdowns, document progress, and ensure field compliance with specifications
- Collect data and submit weekly reports and trackers for self and team
- Track cost variances, review invoices, and identify cost drivers
- Ensure contract compliance and address non-conformances
- Maintain contractor relationships, communicate with the Project Manager, and direct public inquiries appropriately
- Coordinate with environmental, safety, SME, and land teams as needed
Education & Experience
- Substation or industrial construction experience
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings
- Knowledge of safety and environmental requirements
