Our client is a global biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing novel oncology therapies and drug delivery technologies.
The Director, Assistant Controller is a key finance leader responsible for ensuring the integrity of the general ledger and accounts payable functions while driving strategic improvements across financial operations. This role combines operational excellence with forward-looking leadership, overseeing compliance, automation initiatives, and team development. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller plays a critical role in safeguarding financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and enabling organizational growth.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

- Oversee and ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all general ledger postings and reconciliations.
- Lead the month-end close process, delivering reliable financial reporting timely.
- Drive optimization of general ledger and financial systems to enhance general ledger efficiencies.
- Oversee accounts payable operations, ensuring timely and accurate invoice processing and payments.
- Champion accounts payable automation initiatives to reduce manual processing and improve cycle times.
- Drive optimization of accounts payable process to enhance quality of documentation and streamline processes.
- Maintain policies and procedures for accounts payable to ensure adherence to company guidelines and compliance with financial regulations.
- Conduct periodic risk assessments of accounts payable and general ledger processes to identify vulnerabilities.
- Proactively identify and implement control enhancements.
- Build, mentor, and lead high-performing accounts payable and general ledger teams.
- Foster a culture of accountability, innovation and continuous improvement.
- Encourage proactive problem-solving and cross-functional collaboration.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in an accredited accounting program with at least 15 years progressive accounting experience and 5+ years in leadership roles (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
- Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, internal controls, financial reporting and compliance.
- Experience in public company environments; pharmaceutical/biotech/life sciences background preferred.
- Strong proficiency with ERP systems (NetSuite, Great Plains, Epicor), AP tools (Concur) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated success in driving automation and process improvements.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- CPA license and "Big Four" public accounting experience at manager level or above preferred.
