Job Overview
This role supports the engineering and interconnection process for electric generation projects, working closely with internal engineering, construction, commissioning, and corporate teams as well as external Transmission Owners (TOs), Independent System Operators (ISOs), and Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) clients.
The Interconnection Engineer will manage interconnection-related engineering items from application through Commercial Operation Date (COD)
and serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME)
for assigned ISO regions.
Key Responsibilities
Interconnection & Contract Review
- Review draft Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and Interconnection Agreements (IAs) for assigned regions
- Assess contractual requirements and evaluate their impact on project design, schedule, and execution
- Provide engineering feedback to support internal negotiations of PPAs and IAs
Coordination & Stakeholder Management
- Coordinate interconnection deliverables with:
- Transmission Owners (TOs)
- Independent System Operators (ISOs)
- Power Purchase Agreement clients
- Interface with engineering, construction, and commissioning teams to ensure all interconnection requirements are met
- Act as primary point of contact for joint testing, synchronization, and Commercial Operation activities
Deliverables & Milestone Tracking
- Track interconnection deliverables and milestones per PPA and IA requirements
- Monitor interconnection queue positions and milestone progress
- Provide weekly status reports on submittals and critical path activities
- Deliver monthly reporting on interconnection queue milestones
Compliance & Process Monitoring
- Monitor changes in ISO interconnection processes and requirements
- Communicate regulatory or process changes to internal stakeholders
- Ensure plant design aligns with technical and performance requirements defined in PPAs and IAs
Required Qualifications
- Knowledge of ISO tariffs, pro forma, and non-pro forma interconnection contracts
- Familiarity with NERC and FERC technical standards related to transmission and generation interconnection
- Experience reviewing and managing technical and engineering aspects of:
- Power Purchase Agreements (PPA)
- Interconnection Agreements (IA)
- Strong contract interpretation and deliverables management skills
- Experience working within the electric power grid / utility / energy generation industry
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple external deliverables
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with offtakers and transmission entities
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of SCADA systems
- Familiarity with electrical metering devices and metering concepts
- Experience supporting plant synchronization, telemetry, back-feed, and commissioning activities
