Role Summary
This role focuses on operating and maintaining dynamometer test systems for the development and validation of electrified powertrain systems, including drive units and gearboxes.
The Dynamometer Technician will collaborate closely with Powertrain Test Engineers to install, configure, and maintain test setups across complex test equipment. The role involves executing and monitoring tests in line with validation requirements, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality test data to support overall Test & Validation plans.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain large dynamometer systems for vehicle and powertrain testing
- Install and configure instrumentation to collect test data (e.g., accelerometers, strain gauges, thermocouples, pressure gauges)
- Build and set up test rigs for mechanical and electrical testing in collaboration with engineering teams (Powertrain, NVH, Thermal)
- Perform routine maintenance and support mechanical and electrical repairs
- Contribute to Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) practices, including risk assessments
- Support Validation Engineers with system upgrades and modifications
- Perform first-line troubleshooting of test and system issues
- Diagnose and repair prototype vehicle electrical, mechanical, and software systems
- Assist in executing test plans and supporting equipment upgrade projects
- Document findings and communicate results, including early escalation when required
- Develop and maintain process documentation for test rigs and equipment
- Suggest and implement improvements to workshop standards, protocols, and processes
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of technician experience in test cells and/or dynamometer systems
- At least 2 years of experience working with electrified vehicles
- Strong expertise in instrumentation (e.g., thermocouples, RTDs, strain gauges, accelerometers, hygrometers, pressure gauges, flow meters)
- Experience in powertrain test setup and error-proofing
- Proficiency in mechanical tooling and fixture design
- Working knowledge of motors, inverters, and gearbox systems
- Understanding of propulsion and thermal systems (coolant and refrigerant)
- Knowledge of electric vehicle safety standards
- Ability to work in physically demanding or awkward positions
