Job Responsibilities:
In this role, you will manage and support a variety of high-voltage substation engineering projects, particularly related to transmission development and early-stage project planning. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading multiple substation-related projects, including:
o Supporting FERC 1000 RFP initiatives and early-stage diligence projects.
o Defining engineering scope and requirements in collaboration with development teams.
o Overseeing external Engineers of Record (EORs) to ensure compliance and quality.
o Supporting site development, permitting, and engineering updates for substation design and construction. - Ensuring compliance with applicable engineering standards and regulatory requirements, including IEEE, NESC, and ASCE.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams including development, estimating, supply chain, and construction to ensure project success.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
- Support early-stage project development by coordinating site selection, engineering requirements, and permitting activities.
- Provide technical oversight, training, and due diligence for external engineering firms (EORs).
- Develop scopes of work (SOW), solicit bids, evaluate proposals, and support contractor selection through supply chain processes.
- Coordinate geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services for assigned projects.
- Manage procurement and delivery of long-lead substation equipment to minimize schedule and budget risks.
- Support estimating teams with scope development, assumptions, and technical input.
- Represent engineering and construction interests in meetings, providing updates on progress, risks, and mitigation strategies.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to define project priorities and execution plans.
- Ensure projects are executed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with internal procedures and industry standards.
- Support development of technical RFP narratives and documentation.
- Assist legal teams with regulatory filings, depositions, and hearings as needed.
- Collaborate with OEM vendors to enhance and integrate equipment designs with project requirements.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong understanding of high-voltage substation design and engineering principles.
- Knowledge of applicable industry standards (IEEE, NESC, ASCE) and regulatory requirements.
- Strong project coordination, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
- Experience with contractor/vendor management and bid evaluation processes.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and build effective stakeholder relationships.
- Attention to detail with a focus on quality, safety, and compliance.
- Proficiency with engineering tools, documentation, and project tracking systems.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in high-voltage substation design and engineering.
- Experience with transmission or utility-scale substation projects strongly preferred.
- HVDC experience is a plus.
- Project Engineering and/or Project Management experience required.
- PMP certification and/or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is a plus.
- Willingness to travel within North America as needed.
