Job Responsibilities
In this role, you will serve as a Fire Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME)
for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). You will review fire safety designs, evaluate safety analyses, and ensure compliance with industry codes and standards while supporting renewable energy projects across multiple regions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Review UL 9540A fire testing reports at the cell, module, unit, and installation levels and provide technical guidance.
- Evaluate and approve fire safety system designs from BESS manufacturers and project teams.
- Review project and product designs to ensure compliance with fire safety codes and industry standards including UL, NFPA, and IFC.
- Oversee safety analyses such as Hazard Mitigation Analysis (HMA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Heat Flux Analysis, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations.
- Provide technical oversight to ensure all fire safety requirements are met or exceeded for energy storage projects.
- Collaborate with manufacturers, engineering teams, and project stakeholders to ensure safe BESS system integration.
- Develop standardized documentation and templates for third-party safety analyses and reporting to streamline supplier onboarding and project consistency.
Essential Duties and Job Functions
- Serve as the technical authority for BESS fire safety across multiple projects.
- Communicate and collaborate with fire departments, fire marshals, first responders, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Travel to jurisdictions to present battery energy storage fire safety strategies to regulators, public utility commissions, and community stakeholders.
- Support training and education initiatives for first responders regarding BESS hazards and emergency response plans (ERP/EOP).
- Standardize internal communication and documentation related to BESS safety systems.
- Participate in industry technical committees and standards groups supporting advancement of BESS safety codes and regulations.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong knowledge of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and fire safety design principles.
- Familiarity with safety codes and standards such as UL 9540A, NFPA, and IFC.
- Understanding of safety analysis methodologies including FMEA, HMA, CFD simulations, and heat flux analysis.
- Ability to communicate technical safety information to regulators, emergency responders, and community stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and technical review skills for safety reports and engineering documentation.
- Excellent collaboration skills when working with engineering teams, suppliers, and regulatory agencies.
- Ability to travel and present technical information to diverse audiences.
Education & Experience
- Engineering background preferred (Electrical, Mechanical, Fire Protection, or related discipline).
- Experience with energy storage systems, fire safety engineering, or safety analysis in energy infrastructure projects.
- Experience reviewing technical documentation and compliance with industry codes and safety standards.
