Job Overview
The Senior Substation Engineer is responsible for delivering engineering support across the full lifecycle of utility-scale substation projects, from early-stage development through construction, commissioning, and commercial operation. This role requires deep technical expertise, strong project leadership skills, and the ability to manage multidisciplinary engineering activities across multiple large-scale energy projects including solar, wind, BESS, and hydrogen. The position collaborates with development, engineering, supply chain, transmission operators, and construction teams to ensure all substation designs meet regulatory, interconnection, technical, and schedule requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Project Engineering & Technical Leadership
- Lead all assigned substation engineering projects from early development through commissioning.
- Support Early-Stage Project Managers by defining engineering requirements and conceptual design parameters.
- Provide technical oversight, training, and quality review for external Engineers of Record (EOR).
- Ensure compliance with interconnection agreements, scope documents, IEEE, NESC, ASCE, and all relevant codes/standards.
Vendor & Resource Management
- Develop scopes of work and procure engineering consulting services through Integrated Supply Chain (ISC).
- Competitively source geotechnical, surveying, engineering, and construction services.
- Manage long-lead material procurement to minimize cost and schedule risks.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with project stakeholders to secure site information, permits, engineering inputs, and design updates.
- Coordinate with E&C Cost Estimating to refine assumptions, designs, and project cost models.
- Represent E&C interests in meetings with internal and external partners, including executive-level reviews.
Transmission & Interconnection Support
- Support Transmission Services in reviewing system impact studies, facility studies, reactive/harmonics analyses, and interconnection requirements.
- Serve as technical liaison with transmission owners, operators, and ISOs to ensure all deliverables meet regulatory and off-taker requirements.
Project Controls, Quality & Execution
- Track engineering performance, schedule progress, risks, and budget adherence.
- Support commissioning activities and ensure safe, compliant implementation across all project sites.
- Assist Legal with regulatory filings, hearings, and documentation as needed.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating templates, engineering standards, and design best practices.
Research & Design Optimization
- Work with OEM partners to refine component designs to align with internal engineering philosophies and improve system performance.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering required; Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
- 15+ years of experience designing, planning, and executing large-scale energy infrastructure projects.
- Extensive background in substations, transmission systems, and renewable generation (solar, BESS, wind, hydrogen).
- Deep knowledge of industry codes and standards (IEEE, NESC, ASCE).
- Proven ability to manage complex multi-disciplinary engineering scopes.
- Strong vendor management, project leadership, and communication skills.
- Experience coordinating with ISOs, transmission owners, utilities, and EPC partners.
