Position Summary

Our client is a leading energy company headquartered in downtown Houston, TX. They are seeking an experienced Senior Instrumentation & Electrical Designer to support project design and drafting activities across plant, pipeline, and related facilities construction projects. This role requires a senior-level professional capable of independently managing complex design deliverables in a fast-paced project engineering environment.






Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate project design and drafting management in accordance with industry and company standards, including assigning electrical equipment and instrument tag numbers, assigning conduit and cable numbers, resolving drawing development issues, and drafting changes to record drawings.
  • Prepare process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), general equipment layouts, facility plot plans, and equipment and instrument lists for plant, pipeline, and related facilities construction projects.
  • Assist in the development of project scopes, engineering and design scopes, and construction scopes of work for use in establishing contracts with third parties.
  • Attend project meetings to gain a thorough understanding of customer needs and scope definitions, and to provide technical input toward efficient and effective designs.
  • Assist in the review of man-hour estimates and work schedules to ensure efficiency in project execution.
  • Coordinate the distribution of design packages to ensure all stakeholders have the opportunity to provide input and that necessary information is exchanged across the project team.
  • Provide design and drafting services for time- and budget-critical projects, as well as for the preliminary development of potential projects.
  • Communicate with vendors regarding material quotes and availability; perform material take-offs to create parts lists and ensure timely procurement.
  • Develop material data sheets and generate material requisitions for project manager approval.
  • Maintain a comprehensive record of documents and correspondence relating to technical design issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of company standard drawings.
  • Maintain a high level of expertise in relevant areas of design and drafting, and ensure access to specialty resources and technology.
  • Assist in developing and implementing specifications and procedures to facilitate cost-effective creation and maintenance of drawings and documentation.
  • Coordinate with project managers, purchasing agents, inspectors, engineering contractors, and construction contractors on drawing content, materials, and construction issues.
  • Provide drafting support for daily system operations and coordinate with CAD operators as required.
  • Provide guidance to team members to enhance their ability to access required information using departmentally developed tools and methods.
  • Travel by air or automobile to facility sites as required.




Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two-year college drafting degree, technical school training, or equivalent experience with CAD drafting software, processes, methods, or systems.
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience in a project engineering environment.
  • Senior-level experience is required.
  • Experience specifying appropriate equipment for engineering projects.




Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD drafting software and associated design processes.
  • Working knowledge of PFDs, P&IDs, equipment layouts, plot plans, and instrument and equipment lists.
  • Understanding of instrumentation and electrical systems in plant and pipeline environments.
  • Ability to develop and interpret material data sheets and material requisitions.
  • Strong coordination and communication skills with cross-functional project teams, vendors, and contractors.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to facility sites as needed.
