Position Summary
Our client, a utility, is looking for an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead strategic technology initiatives within its Database Engineering organization. Working alongside Database Engineering leadership, engineers, application teams, infrastructure, cloud, cybersecurity, architecture, and vendors, you will deliver enterprise database programs covering modernization, lifecycle management, patching, standards and governance, platform implementations, automation, cloud adoption, and AI-enabled database operations. This role suits a technically minded PM who can turn technical goals into structured programs with clear scope, milestones, ownership, risks, and measurable outcomes.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Lead complex, enterprise-level database and technology projects end to end, from initiation and planning through execution, implementation, and handover to operations
- Build and maintain detailed project plans, schedules, milestones, dependencies, resource needs, risk and issue logs, and executive status reports
- Coordinate work across Database Engineering, Application Development, Cloud, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Enterprise Architecture, Service Management, and other technology teams
- Drive database lifecycle and modernization efforts, including upgrades, migrations, platform refreshes, end-of-life remediation, cloud adoption, and technical debt reduction
- Run enterprise database patching and maintenance programs, covering planning, application coordination, testing, scheduling, risk management, communications, and completion tracking
- Lead the development and rollout of database standards, engineering guidelines, reference architectures, governance processes, and best practices
- Manage the evaluation, onboarding, and implementation of new database technologies, platforms, tools, and capabilities
- Lead AI and automation initiatives for Database Operations, targeting monitoring, incident response, troubleshooting, capacity management, performance tuning, patching, lifecycle management, operational analytics, and engineering productivity
- Work with Database Engineering teams to identify where AI, intelligent automation, predictive analytics, and agentic capabilities can cut manual effort and improve reliability and efficiency
- Define success criteria and KPIs for initiatives, including adoption, automation, operational efficiency, risk reduction, lifecycle compliance, reliability, and cost optimization
- Facilitate technical and executive meetings, making sure decisions, actions, risks, dependencies, and owners are documented and followed through
- Spot risks, constraints, and cross-team dependencies early and drive mitigation and escalation
- Deliver clear executive reporting on project health, progress, upcoming milestones, risks, issues, financials, and decisions needing leadership input
- Coordinate with technology vendors and strategic partners on product implementations, professional services engagements, technical evaluations, and deliverables
- Ensure projects meet enterprise requirements for cybersecurity, architecture, change management, and regulatory compliance
Education/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business, or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of project management experience, ideally on IT or infrastructure projects
- Experience delivering technology initiatives such as system upgrades, migrations, or platform implementations
- Exposure to database or cloud environments preferred
- PMP or Agile certification a plus
Knowledge/Skills
- Strong technology orientation, with the ability to translate technical objectives into structured programs with defined scope, milestones, ownership, dependencies, risks, metrics, and business outcomes
- Experience managing cross-functional initiatives across database, application, cloud, infrastructure, and cybersecurity teams
- Confident presenting to and facilitating meetings with technical teams and senior leadership
- Understanding of database modernization, lifecycle management, patching, and governance
- Interest in applying AI and automation to database operations
