Position Summary

In this role, you will set up and run a range of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. You will also fabricate and modify parts used to build and repair tools and machinery. Day to day, that means reading blueprints and technical drawings, calculating dimensions and tolerances, setting up fixtures and cutting tools, and keeping an eye on feeds and speeds while parts are being machined. Quality is a big part of the job. You'll measure, inspect and test finished parts to make sure they meet specifications before they move on. You'll also help maintain the shop's industrial machines so they stay running reliably. This role suits a hands-on machinist with 2-4 years of experience who is precise, works well on their own and enjoys solving problems at the machine. NIMS certification is a plus.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using shop math and precision instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines
  • Monitor machine feeds and speeds throughout the machining process
  • Measure, inspect and test finished parts to catch defects and confirm they meet specifications
  • Set machine controls, and enter, retrieve or edit commands in computerized machine control programs
  • Maintain industrial machines, using knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • 2-4 years of machining experience required
  • NIMS license/certification preferred

Knowledge/Skills

  • Strong verbal communication, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
