Substation Project Engineer

We are seeking a Substation Project Engineer to support the planning, design, engineering, and execution of electrical substation projects. This role will work closely with internal stakeholders, engineering contractors, field personnel, and project teams to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with applicable engineering standards and utility requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop preliminary project scopes and lead pre-engineering job walks with Construction, Maintenance, Operations, IT, Telecommunications, Field Engineering, Testing, and other stakeholders.
- Prepare, review, approve, and publish job walk meeting minutes, design specifications, and other engineering documentation.
- Coordinate major equipment procurement to ensure materials are ordered in time to meet project schedules and required material dates.
- Provide technical engineering and design support for in-house projects, including guidance, training, and direction to the design team.
- Manage and oversee prime engineering contractors to ensure high-quality designs, adherence to project milestones, and cost-effective delivery.
- Review and evaluate engineering contractor cost proposals for direct-award and competitively bid projects.
- Review and approve purchase order requests, change orders, and service sheets through Ariba.
- Provide technical support to field personnel, project teams, contractors, and internal and external stakeholders.
- Support ongoing utility operations, service reliability, emergent projects, emergency response, stakeholder requests, and applicable NERC compliance requirements.
- Mentor and train engineers and other team members to strengthen the technical capabilities of the Substation Projects group.
- Promote a safety-focused work environment by leading and influencing others to follow established safety protocols and safe work practices.
- Serve as a key point of contact for project requirements, business needs, and technical engineering support.
- Utilize AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Design Manager, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to support engineering and project deliverables.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific, technical, or mathematical discipline.
- 2+ years of experience in substation engineering and design.
- General knowledge of engineering guides, standards, codes, regulations, methods, and practices applicable to complex engineering assignments.
- Experience conducting field meetings, gathering and documenting project requirements, and developing clear meeting notes.
- Hands-on experience developing and updating AutoCAD drawings.
- Strong organizational, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, and other cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of engineering experience.
- Experience applying regulations, engineering standards, codes, guides, methods, and practices within a utility or electrical engineering environment.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the State of California.
- Experience with electric utility substations ranging from 4 kV through 500 kV.
- Experience managing engineering contractors, project costs, schedules, and technical deliverables.
- Experience supporting large-scale utility or infrastructure projects from initial scope through design and execution.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering, business, scientific, or technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
