Engineer-Level 3 – BESS Engineering & Digital Tools
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) engineering team supporting utility-scale BESS and inverter-based resource projects.
This role will provide core electrical engineering support across the project lifecycle while helping modernize and scale engineering workflows through automation, internal software tools, and AI-assisted development.
The ideal candidate is first and foremost a strong electrical engineer who understands power systems, electrical equipment, design deliverables, and project execution. The successful candidate should also be comfortable translating engineering processes into practical Python-based tools and web applications using AI-enabled development platforms or similar technologies.
Electrical Engineering & BESS Design
- Review one-line diagrams, equipment specifications, electrical calculations, design drawings, and technical studies for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
- Support engineering activities involving batteries, power conversion systems and inverters, transformers, switchgear, cables, grounding, protection, controls, and auxiliary power systems.
- Apply electrical engineering fundamentals to equipment sizing, system configuration, power-flow requirements, short-circuit considerations, voltage drop, cable ampacity, reactive power capability, and related design decisions.
- Support resolution of electrical design, equipment, construction, commissioning, and operational issues.
- Perform or guide root-cause analyses for equipment failures, design deficiencies, and system performance issues.
- Collaborate with Engineers of Record (EORs), project engineering teams, and other project stakeholders throughout project execution.
Engineering Tool Development & Automation
- Identify repetitive, manual, or inconsistent engineering workflows that can be improved through automation or internal software tools.
- Develop and maintain engineering applications, calculation tools, data-validation utilities, dashboards, and workflow automation.
- Create tools supporting design reviews, equipment comparisons, engineering calculations, data-quality checks, document generation, requirements tracking, and project decision-making.
- Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Devin, or similar platforms to accelerate software development, testing, documentation, and maintenance.
- Apply sound engineering judgment when developing and validating tools to ensure outputs are technically correct, traceable, and appropriate for engineering use.
- Establish documentation, testing, version-control, and change-management practices for internally developed engineering tools.
- Collaborate with engineers and project stakeholders to define user requirements, prioritize development needs, and support adoption of new tools.
- Help develop responsible practices for the use of AI in engineering workflows, including technical validation, data handling, cybersecurity, and human review.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of engineering experience in power, energy, data center, or industrial infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of power system fundamentals, including one-line diagrams, protection and controls, grounding, arc flash, and interconnection.
- Experience reviewing and coordinating engineering deliverables with external design firms or Engineers of Record.
- Experience with utility-scale BESS, inverter-based resources, or other power/energy infrastructure is highly desirable.
- Experience with Python or other common programming languages used for engineering applications.
- Experience developing engineering tools, automation, dashboards, data-validation utilities, or similar solutions.
- Familiarity with AI-assisted development platforms such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Devin, or similar technologies.
- Ability to validate software-generated engineering results against accepted calculations, engineering standards, and established practices.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, project teams, EORs, and other stakeholders.
