Position Summary
Our client, a leading US energy company, is seeking a BOT Project Engineer to support solar farm design and construction for build-own-transfer (BOT) projects delivered to external customers.
In this role, you will serve as the engineering lead for customer-contracted projects, managing third-party contractor teams while ensuring technical execution aligns with negotiated contractual, performance, and milestone requirements.
Project engineering responsibilities span from proposal support and customer negotiation through construction, commissioning, and warranty. The BOT Project Engineer plays an active role in customer negotiations, helping develop and refine technical contract documents, evaluating customer-driven requirements, and representing the client in live technical discussions. This role requires strong technical judgment, commercial awareness, and the ability to think on your feet in high-stakes discussions while maintaining productive customer relationships.
Following contract execution, the BOT Project Engineer interprets technical agreement documents and translates negotiated requirements into clear internal scopes of work, coordinating across engineering, project management, procurement, development, legal, and other stakeholders to ensure compliant and timely execution. Throughout project delivery, this role maintains direct customer interface, supports Independent Engineer reviews, and guides resolution of scope and technical disputes as needed.
Responsibilities
- Make decisions and recommendations having significant impact on extensive engineering and related activities
- Represent the engineering function in customer-facing and commercially sensitive settings
- Negotiate critical technical and scope-related issues with senior engineers, commercial representatives, Independent Engineers, and officers of other organisations
- Support Independent Engineer reviews and guide resolution of scope and technical disputes
- Maintain direct customer interface throughout project delivery
- Drive contractual milestone achievement; manage exposure to payment events and liquidated damages
Education & Experience
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering required (e.g. Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, etc.)
Required Experience
- Approximately 5+ years of engineering experience, with demonstrated technical ownership on complex, externally delivered projects
- Experience supporting engineering or project delivery for large, multidisciplinary projects, ideally in energy, infrastructure, or other capital-intensive industries
- Ability to review and interpret technical specifications and project agreement requirements, and translate them into clear, executable engineering scopes
- Demonstrated experience coordinating across cross-functional internal teams (engineering, project management, procurement, development, legal, or similar) to support timely and compliant project execution
- Experience engaging with external stakeholders such as customers, EPC contractors, vendors, or partners in technically and commercially sensitive environments
- Strong communication, organisation, and leadership skills, with the ability to exercise sound technical and commercial judgement
Preferred Experience
- Engineering or project management experience on utility-scale solar projects
- Experience managing schedules, budgets, and milestone-driven contractual obligations for major capital projects delivered under EPC, BOT, or similar structures
Knowledge & Skills
- Value engineering to balance reliability, cost, and performance for complex systems
- Thorough knowledge of applicable engineering disciplines including electrical, structural, civil, and materials
- Commercial awareness and ability to engage in technically and commercially sensitive customer negotiations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for internal coordination and external customer interface
