Position Summary
A leading medical device organization is seeking an experienced Registered Nurse to join its Patient Support Center on a part-time, remote contract basis. In this role, the specialist will engage directly with patients who have undergone cardiac surgery involving a transcatheter heart valve implant, supporting them in sharing their personal experiences and recovery stories. These patient narratives are used to provide reassurance and guidance to others who are facing similar diagnoses or procedures. The role requires a clinically credible, empathetic communicator who is comfortable working in a telehealth environment and conducting thorough computer documentation throughout each interaction. There is a strong likelihood of extension and potential to convert to full time.
Key Responsibilities
- Make outbound calls to and receive inbound calls from patients who have received a transcatheter heart valve implant, building rapport and identifying those whose stories may resonate with and support other patients.
- Facilitate patient storytelling conversations, helping individuals articulate their surgical experiences and recovery journeys in a clear, compelling, and supportive manner.
- Conduct telephonic post-procedure follow-up assessments including symptom screening for shortness of breath, fatigue, oedema, and palpitations.
- Monitor medication adherence and anticoagulation compliance and reinforce patient education on signs of complications and when to seek care.
- Assess activity levels, mobility progress, and quality of life since discharge, and support follow-up appointment compliance and care coordination.
- Assess patient suitability for participation in the patient support program based on their experience, communication style, and willingness to share.
- Provide emotional wellbeing support and document patient-reported outcomes accurately throughout each interaction.
- Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of all patient interactions using the relevant computer systems.
- Apply clinical knowledge, particularly in cardiovascular or critical care nursing, to contextualise patient experiences and communicate with credibility and empathy.
- Operate effectively within a telehealth environment, conducting all interactions remotely via telephone or computer-based communication platforms.
Education and Experience
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor's degree required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience in one or more of the following: ICU, CVICU, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac cath lab, heart failure, cardiac stepdown, cardiac rehabilitation, telemetry, or electrophysiology.
- A combination of cardiac nursing and telehealth experience will also be considered.
- Prior experience in a telehealth setting required.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong clinical foundation with the ability to understand and contextualise patient cardiac experiences.
- Excellent verbal communication skills with experience conducting patient calls by telephone or computer-based platforms.
- Proficient with technology; comfortable navigating computer systems and completing documentation digitally throughout patient interactions.
- Empathetic and patient-centred approach with the ability to identify patients whose stories would be valuable to share within a broader support program.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively within a fixed part-time schedule.
