Plant Systems & Regulatory SCADA Engineer
Job Responsibilities
In this role, you will provide technical guidance to a control systems engineering team supporting grid-connected energy storage facilities. The position focuses on regulatory compliance, control system design validation, and enabling optimal participation in wholesale electricity markets.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing technical guidance on regulatory compliance for plant controllers operating in organized electricity markets.
- Reviewing control system designs to ensure alignment with applicable reliability standards, interconnection requirements, and market participation rules.
- Advising engineering teams on ancillary service participation strategies such as frequency response, operating reserves, and voltage support services.
- Supporting implementation and configuration of real-time data exchange protocols used for communication with grid operators and market entities.
- Collaborating with control system engineers on dispatch integration, setpoint management, and operational optimization strategies for energy storage assets.
- Translating market signals and operational requirements into control system logic and operator interface displays.
- Supporting validation testing and performance verification for plant control systems prior to market participation.
- Interfacing with utilities, grid operators, and market participants regarding technical integration requirements.
- Monitoring evolving grid codes, reliability standards, and market participation requirements affecting energy storage resources.
Essential Duties and Job Functions
- Provide subject-matter expertise on regulatory compliance and grid operational requirements for plant control systems.
- Review and validate control system architecture, communications interfaces, and operational logic.
- Support implementation of real-time data communications between plant control systems and external grid operators.
- Assist engineering teams with development of control strategies for dispatch optimization and energy management.
- Participate in system integration testing and performance validation for grid-connected assets.
- Interpret operational and market signals to support development of control logic and operator displays.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure systems meet operational and regulatory expectations.
- Provide technical documentation and guidance related to compliance requirements and operational standards.
- Track industry developments and emerging requirements impacting energy storage participation in electricity markets.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of bulk power system operations and electricity market structures.
- Knowledge of reliability standards, grid codes, and regulatory compliance frameworks relevant to power system operations.
- Familiarity with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with real-time data exchange between control systems and external operational platforms.
- Understanding of energy storage operational characteristics and dispatch optimization concepts.
- Ability to translate operational requirements into control logic and human-machine interface (HMI) design.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams, utilities, and external partners.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple technical priorities.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in bulk power system operations, grid operations, or control center environments.
- Experience working with organized electricity markets or grid operations entities preferred.
- Experience implementing or supporting industrial communication protocols for real-time system integration.
- Familiarity with energy storage technologies or grid-connected inverter-based resources is desirable.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred but not required.
- Experience with control systems engineering, SCADA platforms, or grid operations tools is a plus.
