Prototype Trim Technician – Seat Laboratory

Role Summary
The Prototype Trim Technician – Seat Laboratory is responsible for cutting, sewing, and assembling seat trim covers, as well as supporting the full seat build process.
Key Responsibilities
Trim Cover Cutting & Preparation
- Read and interpret patterns, work instructions, and digital cutting layouts.
- Cut fabric, leather, vinyl, and other materials using manual and automated tools.
- Inspect materials for defects; verify grain, orientation, and color consistency.
- Label and organize cut components to ensure efficient workflow.
Sewing & Trim Cover Assembly
- Operate industrial sewing machines (single-needle, double-needle, overlock, walking foot).
- Assemble seams, top-stitching, and decorative elements to required standards.
- Apply foam, scrim, and reinforcements per specifications.
- Conduct in-process quality checks on stitch quality and dimensional accuracy.
Seat Build & Assembly
- Install trim covers onto seat components (cushions, backs, headrests, armrests).
- Assemble seat structures including frames, foam, plastics, and hardware.
- Use hand and power tools to complete assembly tasks safely.
- Verify fit, finish, and functionality of completed seats.
Quality, Safety & Documentation
- Follow standard operating procedures and quality standards.
- Record production results, defects, and rework in appropriate systems.
- Escalate quality or equipment issues promptly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace (5S, EHS).
Continuous Improvement & Collaboration
- Provide feedback to improve patterns, methods, and tooling.
- Support prototype builds, trials, and engineering changes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve build issues.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in upholstery, seat trim sewing, automotive interiors, or related production work.
- Demonstrated ability to cut and sew complex patterns with precision.
- Experience assembling upholstered products from components to finished build.
Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills
- Proficient with industrial sewing machines and related equipment (cutters, skivers, binders, sergers).
- Ability to interpret patterns, drawings, and work instructions.
- Familiarity with basic manufacturing systems and tools, such as:
- Pattern/nesting software (e.g., Optitex or similar)
- HMI interfaces for work orders and production tracking
- Basic reporting or training systems
Quality & Craftsmanship
- Strong attention to detail in stitching, alignment, and overall finish.
- Ability to self-inspect and resolve defects proactively.
Problem Solving & Collaboration
- Ability to identify and troubleshoot build and fit issues.
- Strong communication skills within a team-based environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, bend, and reach for extended periods.
