Job Responsibilities:
In this role, you will provide sustaining engineering support for precision-machined medical device components, with an initial focus on nuts, bolts, and distal plates. You will work to improve manufacturability, process capability, yield, cycle time, and production reliability while supporting ongoing manufacturing operations.
Key responsibilities include:
· Providing sustaining engineering support for precision-machining processes.
· Identifying and implementing improvements to tooling, fixtures, workstations, setups, cutting parameters, and process controls.
· Troubleshooting dimensional variation, surface-finish defects, burrs, tool wear, scrap, rework, and process instability.
· Analyzing the interaction between part design, tolerances, materials, machining methods, and inspection requirements.
· Leading structured root-cause investigations and engineering studies using data and statistical methods.
· Supporting process qualifications, validations, nonconformance investigations, and corrective actions.
· Updating work instructions, process documentation, risk assessments, and technical reports.
· Partnering with machinists, technicians, Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and other engineering functions.
· Verifying that implemented process improvements are effective, properly documented, and sustainable.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
· Provide hands-on sustaining engineering support for precision-machined components and manufacturing processes.
· Evaluate machining processes to identify opportunities to improve productivity, quality, yield, and process stability.
· Develop and implement improvements to tooling, fixtures, workstations, machine setups, and cutting parameters.
· Investigate dimensional variation and surface-finish issues and develop appropriate corrective actions.
· Troubleshoot burrs, tool wear, scrap, rework, and other machining-related production issues.
· Analyze part designs, engineering tolerances, materials, machining methods, and inspection requirements to improve manufacturability.
· Conduct root-cause investigations using structured problem-solving methodologies.
· Perform engineering studies and analyze process data using appropriate statistical techniques.
· Support process qualifications and validation activities.
· Support nonconformance investigations and corrective and preventive actions.
· Develop, revise, and maintain work instructions and manufacturing process documentation.
· Maintain risk assessments, technical reports, and other engineering documentation.
· Work directly with manufacturing personnel to troubleshoot and resolve production issues.
· Collaborate with Quality, Operations, Maintenance, machinists, technicians, and other engineering teams.
· Lead assigned engineering projects independently from investigation through implementation.
· Verify the effectiveness and sustainability of implemented process improvements.
· Ensure manufacturing processes remain capable, reliable, and aligned with applicable quality and production requirements.
Knowledge & Skills:
· Strong knowledge of precision machining and manufacturing processes.
· Hands-on experience with Swiss turning, CNC milling, micromachining, or similar precision-machining processes.
· Strong understanding of engineering drawings and GD&T.
· Knowledge of tooling, fixturing, machine setups, and cutting parameters.
· Strong understanding of dimensional control and process capability.
· Experience troubleshooting machining and manufacturing process issues.
· Strong root-cause analysis and structured problem-solving skills.
· Ability to conduct engineering studies and make data-driven process improvements.
· Knowledge of process validation and qualification methodologies.
· Understanding of statistical process control (SPC) and measurement-system analysis (MSA).
· Ability to analyze the relationship between design requirements, materials, machining processes, and inspection requirements.
· Ability to work effectively on the manufacturing floor.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to collaborate effectively with machinists, technicians, Operations, Quality, Maintenance, and engineering teams.
· Strong organizational and project-management skills.
· Ability to independently drive engineering projects through completion.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience in medical device or other regulated manufacturing environments.
· Experience manufacturing tight-tolerance, complex metal components.
· Experience with Swiss turning and/or multi-axis machining.
· Knowledge of process validation and equipment qualification.
· Experience with statistical process control and measurement-system analysis.
· Experience with CAD, CAM, and CNC programming.
· Experience applying Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma
methodologies.
· Experience supporting corrective and preventive action (CAPA) activities.
Education & Experience:
· Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
· Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing, machining, process development, or sustaining engineering experience.
· Hands-on experience with precision machining, including Swiss turning, CNC milling, micromachining, or similar processes.
· Experience working with tight-tolerance components and dimensional requirements.
· Experience with engineering drawings, GD&T, tooling, fixturing, and process capability.
· Experience conducting root-cause investigations and data-driven process improvement.
· Experience working directly with manufacturing operations and production personnel.
· Medical device or regulated manufacturing experience is preferred.
