Substation Engineer

We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented Substation Engineer to lead document turnover and file management activities for newly constructed substations within our renewable energy portfolio. This role is critical to ensuring operational readiness, regulatory compliance, and seamless transition from construction to operations. The Substation Engineer will work closely with construction and design engineers, serving as a key technical interface to support successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the substation subject matter expert and customer representative throughout project execution and turnover.
- Oversee and guide contracted field teams to ensure proper execution of documentation and turnover processes.
- Drive continuous improvement of document management, commissioning, and asset transfer processes.
- Support the transfer of asset attributes into the asset management system (Maximo).
- Support activation of required preventive maintenance (PM) tasks for substations entering service.
- Collaborate with solar and energy storage project managers, operations teams, and engineering and construction personnel.
- Manage and store all substation documentation within document management systems (D2/Documentum), including physical, electrical, relay, and equipment drawings.
- Record, organize, and retain documentation for protection and control systems.
- Maintain configuration files for non-protection relays, including communication processors, meters, PLCs, transformer temperature monitors, and related devices.
- Ensure timely receipt, verification, and storage of as-built drawings following construction.
- Catalog all commissioning and test documentation, including relay installations, equipment testing, and ground grid test reports.
- Support control center checkout and operational readiness activities.
- Maintain and update communication protocol tracking documentation.
- Provide recommendations for procurement and management of critical spare parts.
- Ensure proper transfer and retention of regulatory and contractual documentation, including FAC, MOD, CIP requirements, and agreements such as PPAs and GIAs.
- Travel required up to 20%, as needed to support project and operational activities.
Qualifications & Capabilities
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering required; other engineering degrees may be considered with relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of NERC compliance requirements.
- Experience in substation engineering, construction, and/or project management.
- Familiarity with asset management and document management systems.
- Proven ability to lead process development, change initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high level of professionalism.
- Experience in power generation or renewable energy technologies preferred.
- Experience with Maximo and Documentum is a plus.
