Position Summary
Our client is a leading developer of utility-scale clean energy infrastructure across the United States. The Project Manager will lead advanced technical, financial, and regulatory planning for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, taking them from early development through to construction readiness. The role calls for the application of sophisticated engineering, economic, and project management principles to optimise project scope, risk allocation, and financial feasibility across complex, multi-disciplinary infrastructure programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead advanced pre-construction planning and optimisation for utility-scale BESS projects, integrating engineering design, financial modelling, procurement strategy, and regulatory requirements to inform executive investment decisions.
- Manage coordination across highly matrixed project development teams, ensuring resources are aligned to the right activities to meet project schedules.
- Coordinate across environmental, regulatory, cultural, land acquisition, interconnection, and other workstreams to ensure comprehensive project development.
- Develop and optimise technical project scope to improve both technical and financial feasibility.
- Support origination and development teams with PPA and GIA negotiations, as well as jurisdictional compliance requirements.
- Coordinate engineering, estimating, and procurement activities to underpin financial modelling and project design.
- Actively source and leverage market data to ensure financial models remain robust and current.
- Present financial models to relevant business units and manage approval through executive budget processes.
- Competitively source, negotiate, and execute commercial contracts for critical services including geotechnical, survey, engineering, and EPC/PC construction.
- Represent Engineering & Construction interests on assigned projects and utilise relevant software platforms to manage data, track activities, and report on key performance indicators.
- Maintain active communication with executive leadership, suppliers, regulatory agencies, local communities, and other stakeholders.
- Present project progress updates and risk mitigation strategies to management at all levels.
- Ensure a seamless handover of projects transitioning to the construction phase, delivering a complete and executable construction plan to the Construction Project Manager.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of project management experience, with a preference for backgrounds in engineering, economics, or construction.
- Technical experience with renewable energy projects — particularly electricity markets, renewables, or battery storage — is an advantage.
Knowledge & Skills
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and/or Six Sigma experience highly desirable.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Strong project management, financial analysis, and commercial negotiation skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Analytical and problem-solving mindset with the ability to manage complex, multi-workstream projects.
