Position Summary:
The Accountant 2, Payroll
is responsible for processing semi-monthly payroll using Workday, including the integration and management of garnishments, 401(k) contributions, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), commuter benefits, and Health Savings Accounts (HSA). This role also involves preparing time tracking reports, payroll-related journal entries, and reconciliation schedules related to payroll and benefits.
Key Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Process semi-monthly payroll through Workday
- Prepare payroll, paid time off (PTO), and benefits-related journal entries
- Reconcile payroll and benefits accounts as part of the month-end close
- Report stock transactions through payroll
- Participate in system testing for Workday releases and updates
- Manage state payroll tax registrations and garnishment entries in coordination with ADP
- Calculate termination payouts and handle off-cycle checks related to payroll and compensation
- Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls for payroll processes
- Support external and internal audits by preparing payroll and benefits-related schedules
- Reconcile Federal, State, and Local payroll tax returns, including quarterly filings and W-2s
- Maintain adherence to internal payroll controls
- Conduct technical payroll research as needed
- Generate ad-hoc reports to support internal information needs
- Collaborate regularly with Finance and cross-functional teams
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field required
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, general ledger management, and payroll (a combination of education and experience may be considered)
- Proficient knowledge of payroll-related regulations at the local, state, and federal levels
- Familiarity with FMLA, CFRA, CA SDI, ADA, OSHA, COBRA, and ERISA
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel (including pivot tables, charts, and graphs) and Microsoft Word
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to handle confidential information and meet deadlines independently
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills
- Industry experience in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or a related financial environment preferred
- Experience with accounting and payroll software including Great Plains and Workday
- Flexibility in work hours to accommodate collaboration with a California-based team
