Position Summary
Our client, a leading utilities company based in Southern California, is seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Business Analyst to support digital product delivery initiatives on a critical, high-visibility project. This role will transform business requirements into well-defined, actionable user stories that can be efficiently executed by development teams.
The Business Analyst will partner closely with Product Managers, business stakeholders, UX, and technology teams to ensure work is clearly defined, properly prioritized, and ready for development. Responsibilities include eliciting requirements, understanding upstream/downstream system impacts, documenting business processes, creating user stories and acceptance criteria, supporting backlog management, facilitating delivery activities, and ensuring solutions meet business objectives. While the team operates within an Agile framework, day-to-day work will lean more Waterfall in practice — reviewing requirements in whole and writing out the full set of user stories up front. This is a critical project, and the client is looking for someone who can step in and hit the ground running from day one.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with Product Managers and business stakeholders to gather requirements, understand business objectives, customer needs, and workflows, and translate them into clear, well-structured user stories and functional requirements.
- Understand end-to-end systems and clearly articulate upstream/downstream impacts, business rules, process flows, decision logic, dependencies, and exception handling scenarios.
- Identify gaps, risks, and assumptions within requirements.
- Write high-quality, testable user stories and detailed acceptance criteria at an expert level, ensuring sufficient business context and user value.
- Manage and groom the product backlog with Product Managers, prioritizing by user value and validating stories against Definition of Ready.
- Track dependencies across teams and initiatives.
- Hand off requirements to development, clarifying and answering questions throughout the build, and report progress to the Product Manager.
- Work collaboratively with developers, testers, architects, and UX designers to remove ambiguity and support delivery.
- Support UAT creation and execution, validating delivered functionality against requirements and acceptance criteria and triaging defects.
- Coordinate stakeholder reviews and business signoffs prior to release.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- 3+ years of Business Analyst experience supporting software, digital, or technology initiatives.
- Experience supporting customer-facing digital products such as web, mobile, customer self-service, or contact center solutions.
- Expert-level experience writing detailed user stories and acceptance criteria for Agile development teams, with strong command of the level of detail required.
- Experience managing and refining product backlogs.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of product development methodologies, including both Agile and Waterfall approaches.
- Ability to analyze business processes and translate them into technology requirements.
- Strong understanding of end-to-end systems, with the ability to clearly articulate upstream and downstream impacts.
- Ability to translate customer experience and business requirements into actionable requirements.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- Experience using Jira, Aha! (roadmapping), and Figma.
- Experience creating process flows, journey maps, wireframes, or workflow diagrams (desired).
- Familiarity with UX design principles and customer experience best practices (desired).
- Experience supporting large-scale enterprise implementations (desired).
- Knowledge of utility, energy, customer service, billing, payments, or digital customer experience domains (desired).
