Position Summary

Our client, a leading integrated energy company specialising in clean energy generation, transmission, and utility-scale renewables across North America, is seeking an entry-level Commissioning Coordinator to support on-site commissioning activities for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, including solar-coupled systems where applicable. Working under the direction of the Commissioning Manager and project leadership, this role coordinates day-to-day field activities during delivery, installation, quality checks, plant testing, commissioning, and startup. This is a hands-on developmental role well-suited to a recent two-year college graduate eager to build technical and field experience in the energy sector.

US-based travel to project locations for the duration of commissioning activities (up to 75% travel). When not on site, remote support of the team with documentation, progress tracking, and coordination tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the site safety programme, attend toolbox talks, and follow all safety procedures and permit requirements
  • Support system quality walkdowns by comparing installation to drawings and specifications; record observations and punch-list items
  • Assist with mechanical completion walkdowns and basic electrical verification under supervision (labelling checks, termination/torque verification, continuity checks)
  • Help maintain energisation and commissioning readiness checklists (permits, clearances, documents, required sign-offs)
  • Coordinate with EPC/OEM teams to track commissioning activities, open items, and upcoming test windows; escalate risks to the Commissioning Manager
  • Support troubleshooting by gathering field data (alarms, event logs, meter readings), documenting symptoms, and coordinating follow-ups with responsible parties
  • Assist with preparation, review, and filing of test forms, checklists, redlines, and project closeout documentation
  • Provide daily/weekly status updates on progress, open issues, and needs using standard templates and reporting tools
  • Support meetings and coordination with internal teams and third parties — take notes, track action items, and follow up for closure
  • Help coordinate third-party testing activities (e.g. substation, metering) by confirming schedules, access, and documentation requirements
  • Support energisation readiness by tracking prerequisites and ensuring required documentation is available to the team
  • Assist with metering and performance test tasks (data collection, form completion, coordination)
  • Support commissioning team with ISO/GIA/PPA-related testing preparation by organising requirements and tracking deliverables
  • Review test requirements and contractual test criteria with the team to understand scope and documentation needs
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Commissioning, and Project Management to confirm testing prerequisites and required support resources
  • Assist in maintaining the project testing plan by tracking deliverables and ensuring documents are complete and submitted on time
  • Support pre- and in-test alignment meetings: prepare agendas, capture notes, and track action items
  • Support test administration tasks including data collection, basic data checks, and organising results for review by the Commissioning Manager
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Experience

  • Associate degree (two-year college) in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) or closely related technical programme preferred
  • No direct commissioning or BESS field experience required — internships, co-ops, lab-intensive coursework, capstone projects, military technical training, or hands-on trade school experience are a plus
  • Helpful coursework: AC/DC circuits, three-phase power, motors/transformers, electrical prints (one-lines/schematics), instrumentation & measurement, basic PLC/controls, OSHA/NFPA 70E safety fundamentals

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong electrical fundamentals: AC/DC circuits, basic power calculations, and safe measurement practices
  • Ability to read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment nameplates (site-specific training provided)
  • Introductory familiarity with three-phase power systems and electrical equipment (switchgear, breakers, transformers, meters) from coursework or hands-on training
  • Willingness to learn BESS equipment, installation practices, and commissioning workflows (walkdowns, checklists, test forms, turnover documentation)
  • Comfort working around electrical equipment; understands importance of LOTO, PPE, and NFPA 70E electrical safety practices
  • Basic instrument use (digital multimeter/clamp meter); ability to accurately record readings and observations in checklists and reports
  • Interest in protection, controls, and troubleshooting; willingness to learn protection relays, inverters, and BMS/EMS interfaces
  • Familiarity with industrial components (containers/skids, controllers, inverters, transformers, combiner panels) is a plus
  • Interest in control/SCADA systems; basic PLC/HMI, networking, or industrial communications (Modbus, Ethernet) is a plus
  • Strong organisational skills; able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced field environment
  • Proficient (or willing to learn) in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Professional communication skills with contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders
  • Basic understanding of project schedules and planning; able to track progress and flag constraints
  • Commitment to safety and willingness to learn applicable electrical codes and jobsite methods

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to identify colour-coded wiring and tape
  • Prolonged periods of standing with intermittent kneeling or bending
  • Must be physically capable of walking on varied, uneven terrain in varied temperatures and weather conditions
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to operate a motor vehicle between work locations and project sites
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
