Job Responsibilities
In this role, you will manage and support high-voltage substation and switchyard projects from early-stage development through construction and commissioning. Key responsibilities include:
- Leading all assigned substation/switchyard projects from conception (early stage) through execution, construction, and commissioning.
- Partnering with Early-Stage Project Management and Development teams to define engineering requirements and project scope during the conceptual phase.
- Providing training, due diligence, and technical oversight of external Engineers of Record (EOR) to ensure compliance with interconnection agreements, transfer agreements, scope documents, project specifications, site-specific requirements, and applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, ASCE).
- Securing engineering consulting resources from approved suppliers by developing scopes of work, soliciting bids, evaluating proposals, and awarding work through the company’s Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) process.
- Coordinating with project stakeholders and transmission owners to secure switchyard sites and support engineering updates, permitting, and data requirements necessary for design and construction.
- Competitively sourcing and contracting geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services, while supporting cost estimating teams with scope assumptions.
- Representing Engineering & Construction (E&C) interests internally and externally, including preparing and delivering project updates, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies to management.
- Supporting Transmission Services in the review of interconnection documentation, including system impact studies, facility studies, reactive and harmonic studies, and interconnection agreements, ensuring compliance with ISO and transmission owner requirements.
- Managing long-lead major material orders to minimize schedule and budget risks. Assisting ISC with scope development, review, approvals, and procurement documentation for engineering services and materials.
- Supporting estimating teams through template updates, technical input, and scope modifications based on project feedback.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams to establish project priorities, work plans, and clear lines of demarcation.
- Ensuring projects are implemented efficiently, cost-effectively, and safely in accordance with department procedures, industry standards, and company policies.
- Supporting commissioning activities to meet corporate performance objectives.
- Assisting Legal with regulatory filings, depositions, and hearings as required.
- Collaborating with OEM partners to enhance and adapt component designs for improved integration with company engineering standards and philosophies.
Essential Duties and Job Functions
- Provide technical leadership across all project phases, ensuring scope clarity and engineering integrity.
- Maintain compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements throughout project development and execution.
- Oversee contractor and consultant performance to ensure adherence to scope, schedule, and quality expectations.
- Monitor and mitigate project risks related to engineering, procurement, and construction.
- Communicate effectively with transmission owners/operators and ISOs to ensure timely and accurate project deliverables aligned with off-taker requirements.
- Support continuous improvement efforts by incorporating lessons learned into estimating templates, engineering standards, and procurement processes.
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of high-voltage substation/switchyard design and engineering principles.
- Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., IEEE, NESC, ASCE) and interconnection processes.
- Experience managing engineering consultants and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Strong project management capabilities with a proactive, results-driven approach.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with engineering software and standard office applications.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering preferred.
- 7+ years of experience in high-voltage substation/switchyard design and engineering strongly preferred.
- Project Engineering and/or Project Management experience required.
- PMP and/or Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure in a related discipline is a plus.
- Willingness to travel within North America as required.
