IT Project Portfolio Manager

We are seeking an experienced Portfolio Manager to join our PMO Operational Excellence team and play a key role in driving visibility, accountability, and strategic alignment across the IT project portfolio. This role is well suited for a highly organized, analytical professional who enjoys working across multiple teams, partnering with senior leaders, and using data to support informed decision-making.
As a Portfolio Manager, you will oversee portfolio intake, governance, financial tracking, risk management, reporting, and operational metrics. You will work closely with project leads, solution managers, and IT leadership to ensure initiatives are aligned with business priorities, governed consistently, and actively managed throughout their lifecycle.
What You’ll Do
- Manage the end-to-end IT project portfolio, providing clear visibility into project health, timelines, risks, dependencies, and financial performance across multiple IT organizations.
- Analyze portfolio data to identify trends, emerging risks, and systemic issues, and proactively generate alerts and insights for project leads and solution managers.
- Partner with project leads and solution managers to provide coaching, guidance, and best practices related to project execution, governance, and reporting standards.
- Facilitate in-depth monthly portfolio review sessions with senior IT leadership to evaluate project performance, identify at-risk initiatives, and support data-driven prioritization and strategic decisions.
- Develop and track mitigation plans for projects and programs facing risks or challenges, ensuring timely follow-through and accountability.
- Provide one-on-one support to project leads managing high-visibility, complex, or critical initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date project financials, including budgets, actuals, and forecasts for IT-funded initiatives.
- Track, document, and follow up on action items from portfolio reviews to ensure progress and resolution.
- Meet monthly with solution teams to review alignment with project governance standards and address barriers to compliance.
- Host monthly office hours to train, educate, and support project leads on portfolio tools, governance processes, and reporting expectations.
- Continuously evaluate and improve portfolio management processes, dashboards, metrics, and reporting to strengthen operational excellence and transparency.
Required Qualifications
Education & Professional Knowledge
- Strong foundation in Project Management principles and practices
- Experience working in Agile delivery environments
- Knowledge of project accounting and financial management concepts
- Demonstrated financial acumen with the ability to interpret budgets, forecasts, and variances
- Understanding of project governance frameworks and standards
Experience
- 1+ years of experience in Project Management
- 1+ years of experience in Program Management
- Proven experience in project forecasting, budgeting, and financial tracking
- Strong background in risk management, issue identification, and mitigation planning
- Advanced proficiency using Jira for project and portfolio tracking
Core Skills & Competencies
- Excellent facilitation skills, including leading discussions with senior leaders
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insights
- Analytical mindset with experience reviewing and interpreting project and portfolio data
- Advanced Jira experience, including dashboards and Rich Filters
- Strong Excel skills for reporting, analysis, and forecasting
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across teams
Other Requirements
- Ability to commute to the office five days per week.
- Ability to facilitate monthly portfolio review sessions with senior leaders that may last 5–7 hours in a single day.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing or supporting enterprise-level project portfolios
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
- Experience working in Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) environments
- Certified Scrum Master (CSM) certification
- Certified Lean Portfolio Manager (LPM) certification
- Experience using Confluence for documentation, collaboration, and knowledge management
- Experience with Apptio Cost Transparency or similar IT financial management tools
- Experience supporting large, complex IT organizations with multiple solution team.
