Join a leading team in the renewable energy sector as a Principal Engineer, focusing on utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). You will guide the evaluation, design, and optimization of advanced battery technologies while ensuring system integration, performance, and compliance with project-specific requirements and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Design & Engineering
- Lead BESS technology assessment and sizing efforts from interconnection through to final battery integration.
- Continuously improve the BESS sizing calculator and ensure accurate inputs/outputs.
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert for battery OEMs and system design.
Technology Evaluation
- Evaluate new and existing battery technologies for applicability in utility-scale projects.
- Perform technical assessments covering degradation, efficiency, and reliability.
- Deliver regular technology updates (weekly briefs and quarterly summaries).
System Integration & Loss Management
- Optimize DC and AC component sizing considering wider ecosystem losses (e.g., PV or wind).
- Implement strategies to minimize system losses and improve efficiency.
Power Purchase Agreement Support
- Review and interpret power purchase agreements to inform system design and overbuild strategies.
Value Engineering
- Identify bottlenecks and drive system-level optimization.
- Align design improvements with technological innovations and business needs.
Project Management & Supply Chain Coordination
- Liaise with supply chain and engineering teams to synchronize project requirements with component availability.
- Conduct due diligence at battery manufacturing facilities and verify integration/testing processes.
Innovation & Pilot Projects
- Assess technical and commercial readiness of emerging battery chemistries.
- Recommend and support pilot project development in partnership with internal stakeholders.
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Materials Engineering.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in energy storage system design and evaluation.
- Deep knowledge of battery chemistry, thermal management, electrical systems, and integration.
- Proficient in managing system losses and aligning design with PPA requirements.
- Skilled in Excel, PowerPoint, and Power BI; able to collaborate with developers for automation tools.
- Effective communicator with strong documentation and organizational abilities.
- Willingness to travel to domestic and international battery manufacturing facilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 10+ years of experience in engineering, with a strong focus on battery energy storage.
- Professional Engineering (PE) certification.
- Familiarity with applicable industry standards and safety protocols: UL1973, UL9540, UL9540A, NFPA 855, NEC, NFPA 70E, and relevant IFC/IBC codes.
- Experience with power electronics, conversion units, and DC/DC converters.
