    Position Overview
    The Substation Superintendent (Relay) provides technical expertise and on-site leadership for utility-scale solar and battery energy storage (BESS) construction projects. This role supports engineering review, procurement, construction, and commissioning of high- and medium-voltage electrical systems and substations. The Superintendent oversees field operations, ensuring safety, quality, and cost control while coordinating closely with project teams, subcontractors, and external stakeholders.

    This position requires strong experience in programming, testing, and commissioning SEL substation relays.


    Key Responsibilities

    • Oversee construction activities related to substations, including relay systems, control house installation, SCADA systems, and fiber infrastructure
    • Track schedules for equipment, materials, and subcontractors to optimize resource utilization and maintain project timelines
    • Review and validate project scope, specifications, and contract requirements to ensure compliance throughout execution
    • Manage and supervise field engineers, general foremen, and subcontractors to ensure safe, productive, and high-quality work
    • Act as a technical resource on electrical systems, including power distribution, switchgear, transmission lines, and interconnection systems
    • Support project managers and site leadership with cost tracking, forecasting, and identifying potential cost overruns
    • Identify and communicate potential change orders and assist in documentation and resolution
    • Coordinate with engineering teams, subcontractors, and utility representatives during construction and commissioning phases
    • Oversee relay testing, commissioning activities, and energization of substations and associated systems
    • Maintain strong vendor and subcontractor relationships, resolving technical and operational issues as needed
    • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards, company policies, and regulatory requirements (including LOTO, arc flash, and job hazard analysis)
    • Participate in project meetings and provide updates on progress, risks, and performance
    • Support project closeout activities, including documentation and turnover packages
    • Mentor and develop field staff, promoting best practices in safety, quality, and productivity
    • Assist with RFI development and ensure technical accuracy of project documentation
    • Support hiring efforts, workforce planning, and participation in community engagement activities when needed

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • 4+ years of experience in substation construction, electrical systems, or related field leadership roles (typically more required at this level)
    • Hands-on experience programming, testing, and commissioning SEL substation relays is required
    • Strong understanding of high- and medium-voltage systems, substations, and electrical infrastructure
    • Experience managing subcontractors and coordinating field operations on large-scale construction projects
    • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and contract documents
    • Knowledge of job costing, budgeting, and project financial tracking
    • Familiarity with federal, state, and local safety regulations and electrical codes
    • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders
    • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
    • Willingness to relocate to project sites as needed

    • Salary range: $120,000 to $160,000 annually, depending on experience

    Work Environment & Physical Requirements

    • Work is primarily performed on active construction sites and may include fabrication shop environments
    • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, and noise
    • Ability to climb, lift up to 50 lbs, and work at heights or in confined spaces
    • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respirators when necessary
    • Work conditions may include uneven terrain, elevated structures, and restricted spaces
