Robotics Engineer – NACHI / FANUC




LOCATION: Toledo, OH → Normal, IL - both onsite

SCHEDULE: 60 hours/week, 12-hour shifts; rotating AM/PM

DURATION: 3-month initial contract

PAY: 51-56 USD per hour

IMPORTANT: Candidates will spend approximately 2–3 months in Toledo, OH before transitioning to Normal, IL. This is an onsite position at both locations.



Job Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for the programming, integration, commissioning, and optimization of robotic arc welding systems within an automotive Bodyshop environment. You will work primarily with FANUC and NACHI robotic platforms to support MIG welding applications and ensure production-ready, repeatable processes.

Key responsibilities include:

· Programming and integrating NACHI and FANUC robots for automotive body-in-white (BIW) applications.

· Developing and optimizing complex MIG welding paths and robotic trajectories.

· Configuring and fine-tuning welding parameters to achieve consistent weld quality and minimize defects.

· Supporting robotic system integration from initial programming and commissioning through production startup.

· Optimizing robotic welding processes to reduce spatter, thermal distortion, and cycle times.

· Establishing and following robotic programming standards based on process requirements and application types.

· Supporting the structural and geometric integrity of BIW sub-assemblies through accurate and repeatable robotic welding processes.

· Troubleshooting robot, welding, hardware, software, and process-related issues in a high-volume automotive production environment.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

· Program and refine complex MIG welding trajectories on NACHI robots.

· Optimize torch positioning, including work and travel angles and electrode stick-out.

· Configure welding parameter schedules directly on robotic controllers.

· Troubleshoot and eliminate welding defects including porosity, lack of fusion, undercut, and excessive burn-through.

· Develop and maintain automatic Tool Center Point (TCP) check routines.

· Perform TCP maintenance and calibration following consumable changes, including contact tips, nozzles, and goosenecks.

· Maintain accurate and documented backup and version-control procedures for robot controllers.

· Create and maintain periodic image backups of robotic controller systems.

· Program and configure FANUC robots using ArcTool, including weld schedules, torch control, and tool coordinate systems.

· Program and configure NACHI FD/AX series controllers for MIG/arc welding applications.

· Configure power-source interfaces and synchronize robot travel speed with wire feed rates.

· Integrate and maintain welding peripherals, including torch cleaning stations, reamers, wire cutters, neck aligners, and automated TCP calibration equipment.

· Configure communication interfaces including Digital/Analog, DeviceNet, and EtherNet/IP.

· Integrate robotic systems with welding power sources including Fronius TPS/i, Lincoln Electric, and Miller equipment.

· Implement and maintain robot safety systems, including FANUC Dual Check Safety (DCS) and NACHI RMU (Robot Monitoring Unit).

· Support robotic commissioning, startup, and production readiness activities.

· Perform rapid root-cause analysis and troubleshooting during high-volume automotive production.

· Collaborate with PLC programmers, mechanical designers, weld quality inspectors, maintenance technicians, and other engineering teams.

Knowledge & Skills:

· Advanced knowledge of FANUC robot programming and ArcTool.

· Strong hands-on experience programming and integrating NACHI robots.

· Strong understanding of NACHI FD/AX series controllers and arc applications.

· Deep knowledge of MIG/MAG welding processes and robotic welding applications.

· Strong understanding of welding parameters, including voltage, amperage, wire feed speed, and shielding gas flow.

· Knowledge of welding transfer modes, including short-circuit, globular, spray, and pulsed arc.

· Experience integrating robotic welding systems with industrial power sources.

· Knowledge of Fronius, Lincoln Electric, and/or Miller welding systems.

· Experience with Digital/Analog, DeviceNet, and EtherNet/IP communication interfaces.

· Experience integrating welding peripherals and automated TCP calibration systems.

· Knowledge of FANUC DCS and NACHI RMU safety systems.

· Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills.

· Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, high-volume automotive production environment.

· Strong cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.

· Ability to work with PLC programmers, mechanical engineers/designers, weld quality teams, and maintenance personnel.

· Professional working proficiency in English.

· Ability to work extended hours and rotating 12-hour shifts as required.

Education & Experience:

· Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Automation, Welding, Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field.

· Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience programming and integrating FANUC and NACHI robots.

· Minimum of 2 years of experience with MIG welding applications.

· Experience working with robotic welding systems in an automotive BIW/Bodyshop environment.

· Demonstrated experience integrating robotic systems from initial programming through commissioning and production startup.

· Experience with FANUC ArcTool programming is required.

· Experience with NACHI robotic programming and integration is required.

· Experience with welding power-source integration and robotic peripherals is highly desirable.

· Experience with robot safety systems, including FANUC DCS and NACHI RMU, is preferred.

· Experience troubleshooting robotic welding systems in a high-volume manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
