Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Carson, CA (100% on-site)
Duration:
9-month contract
Pay:$65-70/hr
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and development of electro-mechanical components and subsystems for electric drive systems. This role involves creating detailed CAD designs, performing engineering analyses, and collaborating with cross-functional teams and suppliers to deliver manufacturable, high-quality components in a fast-paced development environment.
Responsibilities
- Design sub-systems and components for electric drive units, including wound field motors, permanent magnet motors, and associated mechanical structural components.
- Create and update detailed 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings for electro-mechanical designs at both the component and subsystem level using CATIA V6 or similar CAD platforms.
- Review engineering designs and drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with technical standards.
- Develop detailed work instructions, assembly documentation, and build guidance to support manufacturing and prototype activities.
- Perform design analysis and verification using analytical calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) as required.
- Collaborate with suppliers to support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) efforts, manage open issues, and ensure on-time delivery of components that meet defined acceptance criteria.
- Support development of technical specifications, Design Verification Plans and Reports (DVP&R), validation plans, and Statements of Work (SOW).
- Design and develop assembly tooling and fixtures to support prototype builds and early-stage testing.
- Ensure timely completion of engineering deliverables including designs, drawings, analyses, and supporting documentation.
- Support development activities within laboratory environments, including prototype assembly, testing, and validation, with a hands-on approach.
- Travel occasionally to supplier locations or manufacturing facilities to support testing, root cause investigations, and issue resolution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including manufacturing, testing, integration, and product engineering.
- Participate in root cause analysis activities to identify issue origins, implement containment actions, and drive permanent corrective solutions.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical design of complex systems or components in a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Strong proficiency with 3D CAD modeling, preferably CATIA V6 or comparable tools.
- Experience applying GD&T (ASME Y14.5), performing tolerance stack-up analyses (linear and radial), and defining manufacturable tolerances based on material and production processes.
- Ability to perform structural hand calculations and preliminary FEA studies to evaluate load cases, sizing, and design feasibility.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with technicians, manufacturing teams, and cross-functional engineering groups to resolve design and production challenges.
- Knowledge of rapid prototyping methods, high-volume manufacturing processes, materials selection, and supply chain considerations.
- Hands-on experience with laboratory equipment, measurement tools, and testing setups.
- Strong engineering fundamentals in materials science, mechanics, dynamics, design for manufacturability, precision tolerancing, and metrology.
- Experience leading or contributing to root cause analysis and corrective action processes.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, PFMEA, and DVP&R methodologies.
- Self-motivated with a high-energy, adaptable mindset, able to iterate quickly on designs and continuously expand technical skills.
